“"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."”
— Philippians 1:6
Believers often ask what is sanctification, especially when they hear the word in church and wonder if it applies to them. Sanctification is the ongoing work by which God makes a believer more like Jesus over a lifetime. If justification is the moment God declares you righteous in Christ, sanctification is the lifelong process of becoming, in practice, who you already are in Him.
God\'s work that we cooperate with
Sanctification is first and foremost God\'s doing. "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). At the same time, Scripture calls us to participate: "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you" (Philippians 2:12-13). The two are not in competition. We are like a sail; God is the wind. We raise the sail through the disciplines and obedience, and He moves us.
Why it feels slow
Real change is usually gradual, and that can be discouraging. But Scripture pictures growth as agricultural and patient (Mark 4:26-29). God is not in a hurry, and He is not surprised by your slow seasons. The Spirit is steadily producing fruit, "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness" (Galatians 5:22), often in your character before you feel it. Quick fixes fade; the deep work of God lasts.
Resting in the promise
Because sanctification is finally God\'s commitment, you can pursue holiness without fear of failure. When you stumble, His grace meets you, and the process continues. This frees you to keep showing up in the ordinary means of grace.
