Discipleship & Faith Basics: FAQ

Common discipleship questions answered for new believers: what discipleship is, how to start, baptism, church, doubt, and how to keep growing in Christ.

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

— Matthew 28:20

This discipleship FAQ gathers the questions new believers ask most often as they begin to follow Jesus. Discipleship simply means becoming a learner and follower of Christ, and Jesus promised to be with His disciples always (Matthew 28:20). If you are starting out, these answers will help you take the next step with clarity and confidence.

Honest questions are welcome

You will not find judgment here, only encouragement. Everyone who follows Jesus once stood exactly where you are, full of questions and learning as they went. The early believers "continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship" (Acts 2:42), growing together over time. The answers below cover the basics; for deeper dives, follow the links to our other faith basics pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is discipleship? +
Discipleship is the lifelong process of following Jesus and becoming more like Him. It involves learning His teaching, obeying it, and growing in love for God and others, all by His grace.
How do I become a Christian? +
Turn from sin, believe that Jesus died and rose for you, and receive Him as Savior and Lord. Romans 10:9 says if you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him, you will be saved.
Do I need to be baptized to be saved? +
Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus. Baptism is an important step of obedience that follows faith and publicly declares your new life in Christ, but it does not earn salvation.
How do I start reading the Bible? +
Begin with one of the Gospels, such as John, and read a short passage each day. Ask what it reveals about God and how you should respond, and let it shape your prayers.
Why do I need to join a church? +
God designed believers to grow together, not alone. A church provides teaching, worship, accountability, and friendship that strengthen your faith (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Which denomination should I choose? +
Rather than focusing on a label, look for a church that faithfully teaches the Bible, preaches the gospel, and helps you grow in Christ. Faithfulness matters more than the name.
What if I still have doubts? +
Doubts are a normal part of growing faith. Bring your questions honestly to God and to mature believers. Many doubts soften as you read Scripture, pray, and walk with others.
How do I keep growing as a disciple? +
Stay connected to Jesus through prayer, the Bible, worship, and fellowship, and put what you learn into practice. Growth is steady and gradual, fueled by God's grace, not your perfection.
Is PraiseHim Club really free? +
Yes. Joining PraiseHim Club is completely free. We are a non-denominational community that exists to help believers pray, learn the faith basics, and grow in Christ together.
